We are looking for an experienced Environment Officer (a Ranger) to look after over 200ha of semi-natural open space in Gloucester.
A Ranger by any other name, the successful candidate will work as part of the Countryside team, assisting in the provision and delivery of high quality, natural green spaces across Gloucester including our Country Park, SSSIs and Nature Reserves. You will be involved in the day-to-day maintenance of these spaces to enable their safe and appropriate use by the community, complying with all legislation, grant schemes and health and safety, as well as internal policies and procedures. Within the role, you will provide advice and guidance to visitors and assist with events and educational activities. You will identify any problems and issues relating to the use and management of the sites and implement solutions and be able to assist with routine management of our livestock. You will also be required to provide weekend duty ranger cover as part of a rota.
You must have a good level of education, including a qualification in an environmental subject and also hold relevant certificates in maintenance and use of hand and power tools. You should have practical experience in nature conservation and land management including experience of developing and managing volunteers, as well as a good knowledge of relevant legislation and working practices. It is essential that you have the ability to undertake land maintenance work including the use of power and hand tools and have a sound understanding of health and safety. Understanding of land, habitat and wildlife management is also essential.
This Countryside Unit post is based at Robinswood Hill Country Park where there is ample car parking and when complete the new Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust HQ and Cafe, and also covers several other sites around the City.
It’s a temporary contract for 2 years, and working hours are on a rostered shift basis which will include weekend working, currently 2 out of every 4 weeks . This will also include approximately 10 late shift / evening lockups (up to 21:00 during the summer period, 16:30 in winter) a month.
